About Durgapur

Overview of Durgapur

Durgapur is an industrial city in Paschim Bardhaman district, West Bengal, built around the Durgapur Steel Plant (DSP) of SAIL, which was set up in the late 1950s. It is often called a steel city. Its power comes mainly from Durgapur Projects Limited (DPL) and the DTPS plant. The city is spread over a wide area; the municipal corporation covers 157 sq km with a 2011 census population of about 5.81 lakh.

Several neighbourhoods have distinct characters. The steel township has A, B and C zones, DPL has its own township, and Bidhannagar (including Sector 2D and ABL Township) and City Centre are the commercial and residential hubs. Amlajorah, Rajbandh and the G.T. Road belt are also referred to in public listings.

Civic services come from the Durgapur Municipal Corporation. Planning is by the Asansol Durgapur Development Authority (ADDA), formed on 1 April 1980 by merging the Asansol Planning Organisation and the Durgapur Development Authority, under the West Bengal Town and Country (Planning and Development) Act, 1979. A state page gives its area as about 1,616 sq km from Panagarh to Barakar, though that page looks dated. ADDA is listed by the state urban development department as having a legally valid land use and development control plan.

The wider Asansol-Durgapur planning area is described as suited to power-intensive industry, mining, iron and steel, engineering, petrochemicals and IT. That industrial base explains why much of the housing was built for workers, and why the city's fortunes follow its major employers. A buyer should therefore look at the health of the employer or sector that supports the neighbourhood they are considering.

Connectivity

Durgapur lies on the Howrah-Delhi main railway line, and its station has five platforms. Third-party timetable sites list long-distance trains passing the station and a Howrah-Gaya Vande Bharat stopping there. Whether any specific Rajdhani halts is unclear from our sources, so check the official timetable. National Highway 19 (the G.T. Road, also called the Durgapur Expressway) runs through the city; the Paschim Bardhaman district site gives 173 km and about 3 hours 45 minutes to Kolkata.

Kazi Nazrul Islam Airport (Andal, code RDP) is around 15 to 20 km from the city centre depending on source, with flights listed to Kolkata, Delhi and Mumbai. Taxis and buses link it to town. Andal Aerotropolis, a roughly 2,182 acre airport and township scheme, is a related project at Andal.

Inside the city, people mostly use autos, buses and their own vehicles, and the main roads connect the townships to the G.T. Road. We could not find reliable commute times between neighbourhoods, so drive the route at peak time yourself. If you rely on trains, confirm the halts of the specific services you need, because third-party timetable pages can be out of date.

Schools, colleges, hospitals and shopping

NIT Durgapur is an Institute of National Importance, founded in 1960 as Regional Engineering College, with a campus of about 187 acres. Other institutions listed publicly include Techno India Durgapur, Michael Madhusudan Memorial College at City Centre, and the DSMS business school.

The Mission Hospital, a private super-speciality hospital founded in 2008, is in Bidhannagar Sector IIC with 24-hour emergency care; a listing puts it about 6 km from the railway station. Gouri Devi Institute of Medical Sciences and Hospital is on G.T. Road, Rajbandh. We found no source for a SAIL hospital in the plant township. City Centre has a mall known as Bengal Ambuja, though we did not verify its current stores.

Property market on ADiHomes

ADiHomes has no live listings or projects in Durgapur yet (as of October 2026). Housing types seen in public descriptions include company-style quarters in the steel and DPL townships, apartments and independent houses in Bidhannagar and City Centre, and newer apartment blocks along the G.T. Road belt. We give no prices or rates because we could not source them.

When listings arrive they will appear under new projects in Durgapur and flats for sale in Durgapur.

Note that township quarters belong to the employer; private buyers should know whether the property is freehold or a company lease before paying.

Civic matters

Water depends on the Durgapur Barrage on the Damodar river, built by the Damodar Valley Corporation mainly for irrigation and also to supply the industrial township. One report says the township of about 5.22 lakh people depends on it. The system has failed before: on 31 October 2020 a gate of the barrage bent under pressure, and a separate report described a lock gate leak that left it dry for two days, hitting industry and forcing tanker supplies. Water to homes took hours to resume because the level was too low for treatment plants.

Pollution is documented for the wider Damodar basin, with coal mine drainage, fly ash, industrial effluents and untreated sewage cited, and a 2022 study linked heavy metal loads to industry and mining. We could not find reliable official air quality data, only an unverified automated page, so check Central Pollution Control Board and West Bengal Pollution Control Board readings.

Power supply comes from DPL and DTPS, which suits industry. We found no reliable local data on outages, flooding or stalled projects, so ask existing residents.

Aerial metros and aerotropolis schemes in India are often announced well before they are built, so treat them as possibilities rather than reasons to pay more or expect specific benefits. Look for the sanctioned project report, funding and tender status instead of relying on press statements.

Infrastructure underway or planned

  • Asansol-Durgapur aerial metro: feasibility study by RITES announced in July 2026; no construction yet.
  • A separate bridge project: detailed project report being prepared (location not stated in what we read).
  • Logistics hub for the Asansol-Durgapur belt: being explored.
  • Durgapur to Kolkata section (132 km) of the Durgapur-Haldia natural gas pipeline, and road over bridges at Topsi and Pandabeshwar: launched in July 2025.
  • Andal Aerotropolis: land use plan approved by ADDA; current construction status not confirmed.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Planned industrial city with organised townships.
  • NH 19 and the Howrah-Delhi rail line pass through.
  • Airport in Andal within 15 to 20 km.
  • Technical education and a major private hospital.

Cons

  • Dependence on one barrage for water.
  • Industrial pollution in the Damodar basin.
  • No metro; the aerial metro is still a study.
  • Local economy tied to a few large employers.

Who it suits

Because the city is spread across separate townships, it works best for buyers who already know which sector or institution they are tied to, such as the steel plant, DPL, the NIT or the hospitals, and who can pick a neighbourhood close to it.

Durgapur suits people employed in steel, power and engineering, students and faculty linked to NIT Durgapur, and families who want a planned city with a calmer pace than Kolkata. It suits fewer buyers who need frequent flights or metro access. This is our reading of the facts above, not advice on any project.

Pre-purchase checklist

  • Check the project on the West Bengal Real Estate Regulatory Authority (WBRERA) portal, rera.wb.gov.in.
  • Confirm the plan sanction from the municipal corporation or ADDA, and the land use under the ADDA plan.
  • Ask whether the plot is freehold, leasehold or company land, and check title and encumbrance records.
  • Ask about water supply source, pressure and past disruptions.
  • Check current air quality readings near the property, especially close to industrial zones.
  • Test the commute to the airport, station and your workplace at peak times.
